There’s something about the school holidays that sparks that sudden urge to pack the car, board a plane, or escape somewhere—anywhere—with the fam. But as any parent knows, travelling with kids isn’t always the relaxing escape we envisioned. Whether you’re heading off on a beachside road trip or flying interstate to visit the grandparents, there are a few clever things you can do to make the whole experience smoother, calmer, and (dare we say it?) actually enjoyable. Here are five travel hacks that just might change the game.
1. Prep Like a Pro: Pack Smart, Not Hard
Packing for one person? Easy. Packing for a whole family, including a teething toddler and a teenager who changes outfits twice a day? That’s another story. The trick is organisation. Think packing cubes (lifesavers) and a checklist for each family member—yes, even the baby. Keep a separate “go-to bag” with snacks, wipes, nappies, chargers, and spare clothes within arm’s reach. And if you're heading somewhere chilly, don't forget your matching PJs (we hear there's a pretty cute selection right here).

2. Turn Your Car Into a (Quiet-ish) Entertainment Hub
Long drives can quickly go from peaceful to painful if you’re not prepared. Audio books and kid-friendly podcasts are gold for keeping the whole car entertained—and off the screens! Even the old classic car games like “I Spy,” “Guess the Song,” or “Would You Rather” are simple, screen-free boredom busters. And as for snacks, pack ones that don’t leave crumbs behind. You’re welcome!!
3. Flying? Make Friends with the Flight Attendant
If you’re boarding a plane with kids, especially babies or toddlers, a little pre-boarding chat with the crew goes a long way. Most flight attendants are incredibly helpful and will do their best to make you and your little one feel comfortable. Our favourite hack is to pack a small surprise toy or book. Something new that they haven't played with before = instant excitement and keeps them occupied longer! And kind of an obvious one, but always, always bring extra snacks!!

4. Routine-ish is Your Best Friend
While holidays are all about breaking free from the usual routine, kids thrive with some level of predictability. Try to stick to rough meal and sleep times where possible—especially with babies or younger kids. Familiar comforts (a bedtime story, their favourite blankie, or their go-to PJs) go a long way in making unfamiliar places feel a bit more like home.
5. Make Memories, Not Meltdowns
Lastly, go easy on yourself. Not every moment will be Instagram-worthy—and that’s okay. Give yourself permission to laugh through the chaos, embrace the mess, and skip the strict itinerary. Sometimes the best memories are made when things don’t go to plan - like that time your toddler thought the airport escalator was a theme park ride!

No matter where your school holiday adventures take you, travelling with kids can be a little wild—but also wonderfully unforgettable. And hey, matching family pyjamas don’t just look adorable in photos—they make for the comfiest wind-down after a big travel day.
